Commerce where the buyer is a piece of software rather than a person. It needs three things a human checkout never did: a way to pay per request, an identity a merchant can recognise, and a spending limit its owner sets.
An agent does not read a pricing page, sign up, or enter a card. It makes a request, is asked to pay, pays, and continues. Everything built for a human customer is in the way.
A subscription cannot price a single API call. x402 attaches a stablecoin payment to an ordinary web request and settles it in one round trip, which is the shape this actually requires.
A merchant receiving money from software needs to know which software, whose it is, and what it is allowed to spend. That is an identity problem before it is a payments problem.
Coinbase reported 69,000 active agents, 165 million transactions and around $50 million of cumulative volume over x402 by late April 2026 — the protocol author’s own figures.
Cloudflare announced Cloudflare Wallets on 4 August 2026 with Virtual Wallets designed for agents, operating via API keys and capped by their owner with an allowance, an allow list and a maximum transaction size.
Buying and selling where the customer is software rather than a person — an AI agent paying for an API call, a data feed or a piece of content, without a human at the keyboard for each transaction.
Increasingly over x402, an open protocol Coinbase released in May 2025 that attaches a stablecoin payment to an ordinary web request. The agent makes a request, is told payment is required, attaches the payment and retries — all in one round trip, with no account or API key.
Coinbase reported 69,000 active agents, 165 million transactions and around $50 million of cumulative volume on x402 by late April 2026. Those are first-party figures from the protocol’s author and are not independently audited.
Because a merchant taking money from software needs to know whose software it is and what it may spend. Cloudflare’s Virtual Wallets are issued to agents on API keys and capped by the Account Wallet owner with an allowance, an allow list and a maximum transaction size.
